Marissa and Sesser Valier will meet in championship
The Marissa-Coulterville Lady Meteors and the Sesser Valier Waltonville Lady Red Devils will meet in the championship game of the 4th annual Lady Jacket Mid-Winter Classic Saturday night.
In the championship semifinals Friday night, Marissa-Coulterville took care of Elverado 53-15 while Sesser Valier pulled away from Trico in the fourth quarter and beat the Lady Pioneers 49-34.
In the first game of the night, the Lady Meteors jumped out to a fast 13-4 lead after the first quarter and held the Lady Falcons scoreless in the second quarter. M-C built a commanding 31-4 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
Elverado set a new tournament record for least points in a half with four points. The previous mark was five points set by New Athens earlier this week.
The Lady Falcons also tied a tournament record for least points in a quarter with zero.
Marissa-Coulterville outscored Elverado 10-6 in the third quarter and took a 41-10 lead heading to the fourth.
Kara Wine led Marissa-Coulterville with 18 points, the only Lady Meteor to reach double digit scoring. Kendra Goss added nine while Camille Bumann finished with eight.
Lacey Qualis led Elverado with nine points. Chelsea Cocharan, Meghann Trammel and Rebecca Korando each had two points.
Elverado will meet Trico for the third place game Saturday night at 5:30pm.
In the nightcap, Sesser Valier Waltonville slowly pulled away from Trico in the second half to beat the Lady Pioneers 49-34.
Sesser Valier led 16-11 after the first quarter and built a 27-21 lead at halftime after outscoring the Lady Pioneers 11-10 in the second quarter.
Trico trimmed the Lady Red Devils lead down by a point after outscoring Sesser 9-8 in the third quarter.
But in the fourth, Sesser Valier outscored Trico 14-4 to win the game by 15 points.
Lorena Marlo led Sesser Valier with 17 points. Kate Laird tossed in 12 and Ashley Slack finished with 10.
Chelsea Jarrett led Trico with 17 points. Stephanie Cochran added six while Beth Daniels and Rebecca Dilday each had four.
The tournament will continue Saturday morning with the consolation semifinals. Chester will play Agape Christian at 10am while New Athens will play Valmeyer at 11:30pm.
Colbert Gym will then be cleared out and prepped for the championship round which will begin at 2:15pm with the seventh place game.
