Marissa-Coulterville wins fourth annual Lady Jacket Mid Winter Classic
The Marissa-Coulterville Lady Meteors rallied from a first half deficit and beat the Sesser Valier Waltonville Lady Red Devils 52-47 in overtime Saturday to win the fourth annual Lady Jacket Mid Winter Classic.
The exciting championship game wrapped up a long day of basketball at Daniel Colbert Memorial Gymnasium.
In the 7th place game earlier Saturday, Valmeyer defeated the Lady Knights of Agape Christian 61-42.
Valmeyer jumped out to a 16-6 lead after the first quarter and never trailed the rest of the game. After outscoring Agape 16-10 in the second, Valmeyer held a commanding 33-16 lead at halftime.
Any hopes of a comeback by Agape was erased in the third as Valmeyer outscored the Lady Knights 22-9. The Lady Pirates held a 55-25 lead heading to the fourth.
Caitlin Nappier led Valmeyer with 16 points while Chelsea Nabers finished with nine.
Agape was paced by Ashley Dietz's game high 18 points while Haley Holland finished with 15.
In the consolation championship, the Chester Lady Yellow Jackets rallied from a halftime deficit and defeated the New Athens Yellowjackets 43-39.
Chester led 11-9 after the first quarter thanks to four first-quarter points from Jordan Clendenin and Hilary Best. However, New Athens outscored Chester 13-9 in the second and took a 22-20 lead to the locker room at halftime.
But Chester took control back for good in the third, outscoring New Athens 16-10 and had a 36-32 lead heading to the fourth.
Hilary Best finished with a game high 19 points to lead Chester. Jordan Clendenin finished with eight while Shelly Lyons and Ariel Gales each had six points.
Erika Laumbattus led New Athens with 17 points while Hannah Parker finished with eight.
The Trico Lady Pioneers took home the third place trophy in their first ever appearance in the Mid Winter Classic after they defeated the Elverado Lady Falcons 43-31.
Trico jumped out to a 12-4 lead after the first quarter but Elverado held the Lady Pioneers to just three points in the third quarter while scoring eight of their own. Trico still lead though at halftime 15-12.
The Lady Pioneers slowly pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Elverado 15-10 and took a 30-22 lead heading to the fourth.
Beth Daniels led Trico with a game high 17 points while Stephanie Cochran added 13. Elverado was led in scoring by Rebecca Korando's eight points while Courtney Morse finished with seven.
32 minutes wasn't enough basketball for Marissa-Coulterville and Sesser-Valier in the championship of the Lady Jacket Mid-Winter Classic. It took an extra four minutes to decide the championship and when the dust settled inside Daniel Colbert Memorial Gymnasium, the Marissa-Coulterville Lady Meteors took home the top trophy following a 52-47 win over the Lady Red Devils.
Sesser Valier jumped out early, building a 16-5 lead after the first quarter horn but Marissa-Coulterville kept chipping away at the lead the rest of the game.
The Lady Meteors outscored Sesser Valier 17-9 in the second quarter and trailed the Lady Red Devils 25-22 at the intermission.
After each team scored nine points in the third quarter, Sesser-Valier had a 34-31 lead heading to the fourth.
Sesser-Valier tied the game with six seconds left to send the game to an extra four minutes tied at 43-43. In the extra session, the Lady Meteors outscored Sesser Valier 9-4 to win the championship game 52-47.
Kara Wine led Marissa-Coulterville with 11 points while Brittany Sloan finished with 10 points. Chelsea Weekley finished with nine in the winning effort.
Sesser-Valier was led by Lorena Marlo and Ashley Slack who each tossed in 12 points. Kate Laird finished with eight points.
